RR #8 Wadsworth Ch. 11
In chapter 11 of the Wadsworth Guide to Research, it tells us that after we explore patterns of organization, we much then pick a style that supports our research and rhetorical situation. It tells us to decide on a pattern of argument and determine how to organize the argument that you are constructing. Common argument patterns are evaluation, comparison and contrast, definition, proposal, and cause and effect. Common presentational patterns include least important to most important, most important to least important, and chronological organization. The introduction and conclusion of your argument are very important in catching the audience's attention. The introduction needs to be able to draw the reader in, and make them want to continue reader. The conclusion should be a review of what was discussed and should motivate the audience to go out and do something with the information. The last consideration is how you are going to present your research, or your method of delivery. The most common form is an academic essay, which uses the IMRAD format. Intoduction, methodology, results, analysis, and discussion is the described format.

It's getting old having to say that I cheated, but I did it once again. However this time wasn't entirely my fault. I'm starting a new waitressing job at Show Me's. It's kind of like a Hooters (don't judge me!). Today we had to taste the food for our live run-through. It was recommended that we try as much as we could so we would know what things taste like. We needed to be able to know what the food tastes like in order to let the customers know what we truly thought about it, especially the different chicken wing sauces. We needed to know which ones were spicy, and which ones weren't. So yes, I cheated again. I didn't eat very much though. I just had little tastes of things to get the idea. I feel like I have cheated way too much with my immersion, and I'm starting to feel like I'm failing at it.
FOOD DIARY
small tastes of a variety of foods
1 bowl Special K
1 salami sandwich with cheese and mayo
1 bowl chicken noodle soup
FUN FACT
The Boneless Buffalo Chicken Salad at Chili's has 1010 calories. Whoever said salads were healthy had obviously never eaten this one!

Day #19
Saturday, March 19th, 2011
The immersion is starting to get old. It's not that I'm really craving fast food, but it is very inconvenient to not go out to eat. Even though I have cheated and eaten out, I have not had any soda or fast food. I am proud of myself for that. Those were the two main things that I wanted to give up. Eating out was just an extra. I figured if I didn't eat fast food, I would just go out to eat at restaurants even more. I haven't eaten out that much at all so I feel that other than cheating, my project has been pretty successful.
FOOD DIARY
1 large salad
1 bowl of Special K
20 grapes
5 strawberries
FUN FACT
Wendy's fish sandwich has 500 calories!

Day #18
Friday, March 18th, 2011
YES! I CHEATED AGAIN! Oh, I'm so ashamed. This immersion is not turning out the way that I wanted it to. I figured that I would be able to not cheat and control myself, even though I knew this was going to be hard. This is my second time cheating, and I do feel a bit more guilty this time. The night started when my friends and I were on our way to Indy. I was driving separately behind them. About 20 miles from Muncie, my car starts making a loud sound, and pretty much sounded like my car was going to explode. Long story short, I had to leave my car on the side of the road and call to get it towed. Luckily, it was towed that night, and I found out that I had blown my back left tire out. We preceded to go to Indy and were planning to go to dinner. My friends decided on P.F. Changs, a nice Chinese restaurant that I had never been to before. Being in a bad mood all night, I decided to fulfill my sadness with a few plate fulls of Chinese food. But even though I cheated, you should be proud. We went to the Cheesecake Factory for dessert. I was very good, and did not get any cheesecake. That took a lot of self control. Maybe there is hope for me after!
FOOD DIARY
1 serving shrimp and lettace
1 serving pepper steak
10 pizza roles with ranch
1 bowl of special K
FUN FACT
At In-and-Out Burger, a Double w/onion has 670 calories, 370 of those calories from fat. That is a HUGE amount of calories for one item!

Day #17
Thursday, March 17th, 2011.
As you can see, I didn't eat much today. I don't know why, but I really am getting used to eating less and less. Which I guess isn't a bad thing, but it is when you're not eating the right foods. I am basically eating junk. It's not completely unhealthy, but I could be eating better snacks. I need to go to the grocery store and buy some fruit and lower calories snacks. I need to make sure that if I am going to eat multiple snacks throughout the day, that I am choosing healthy ones that give me the nutrition that I need.
FOOD DIARY
2 granola bars
1 package cheese-its
1 package fruit snacks
1 medium caramel frozen coffee
FUN FACT
Ordering a salad at a fast food restaurant should be healthier, right? WRONG! At taco bell, a chicken ranch taco salad has 910 calories! It is in the top three items on the menu with the highest calories. Nice try!

Day #16
Wednesday, March 16th, 2011
Hello! Today was a tough day for me. For some reason I was craving Taco Bell all day! I was really hungry throughout the day, and my snacks just weren't holding me over. Thankfully, I did have time to run home between jobs and eat 'dinner'. Really, it was breakfast. In a matter of about ten minutes I made myself some sausage and waffles, and ate REALLY quickly. I don't know why, but I love eating breakfast for lunch or dinner. I think I'm used to it because I grew up with it. My dad used to make breakfast for dinner all the time. It was kind of our 'thing'. It's nice to know that our immersion is half over, but I'm still gonna hold off until Lent is over. I am really gonna try hard to not start eating fast food at all. I don't want to pick up the habit again. I think I could avoid fast food, and just go out to eat every once in awhile. I would try to order healthy things on the menu. Hopefully I will be able to keep it going and not go back to my old ways!
FOOD DIARY
1 granola bar
1 bowl of Special K
2 ego waffles
4 sausage links
FUN FACT
I'm not sure how you feel, but I hate KFC! I'm not really sure what else is most popular besides the chicken, but this sounded kind of good. The chicked pot pie has 790 calories! 410 of these calories are fat calories.

Day #13
Sunday, March 12th, 2011
Last day of spring break, nooooo!! Well it's been a good break, and I definitely needed it. I ate a late breakfast this morning, and a late dinner. Overall, I'm feeling pretty good about my immersion so far. I feel so much healthier and I can tell a change in my body. I haven't lost a lot of weight, but I have slimmed down a lot. I haven't even been working out very much and I still feel so much better. We're almost to the halfway point and I think I will be able to make it. I haven't really had any problem craving fast food. Yes I did cheat, but it was more because it was a special occasion, not because I wanted to eat out. I think I will be able to keep this up long after the immersion is over. I do miss drinking pop though. I have really been craving caffeine a lot. I'm not much of a coffee drinker so I haven't really had any caffeine during the immersion. I would give anything to drink a cherry coke!!
FOOD DIARY
1 bagel with cream cheese
1 bowl Special K
3 slices pepperoni pizza
FUN FACT
Texas Roadhouse has the best dinner rolls! But in those tiny little pieces of bread there are 226 calories, and 45 grams of fat!

I have been dreading typing this post all night.....I CHEATED! Ahhhh, I can't believe it happened, but I couldn't control myself. We were celebrating my friends birthday last night at the new Chinese buffet place. Chinese food has to be one of my favorite thing to eat. And all my friends had there plates sitting right in front of me, so I decided to eat dinner with them. I did get a water to drink instead of a soda...that counts for something, right? RIGHT?? Yes, I do feel bad that I cheated, but at least it will make my paper about my immersion project a little more interesting. I will have some failures to talk about. And yes, it was definitely worth it!
FOOD DIARY
3 scrambled eggs
1 piece of toast with butter
1 glass of chocolate milk
2 plates chinese food

Day #10
Thursday, March 10th, 2011
Oh hello there. Today was a long day! 6 hours of work absolutely drained me. I woke up about 30 minutes before work; enough time to eat breakfast. I packed a granola bar for a snack. I surprisingly wasn't hungry at all during my shift. When I got off work, I went home to change, ate a sandwich, chips, and cookies, then headed back to the gym to play soccer with some friends. It was a great workout! Then came the real test. I went out to eat with my friends to Buffalo Wild Wings, which is my favorite restaurant. It was pretty close to torture. I had to sit there while my friends ate their wings and drank there soda. I was so jealous. At one point, I accidentally grabbed a crouton off my friends salad and popped it into my mouth. I immediately remembered and spit it out. It was pretty hilarious, and all my friends made fun of me. The only good part about going out to eat was that I was the only one without a bill at the end of the night. I have actually saved a lot of money from not eating out. It has definitely been a positive thing since I've started. It is also something that I think I could continue sacrificing. I could get used to having all this extra money!

First day of Lent!!! Hello there spring breakers! Hope everyone is enjoying their break from school. I know I am. Today has been a pretty good day. I woke up and made breakfast with my friends once again. Pancakes, eggs, bacon, and chocolate milk. It was so good! I had a long day at work today. I worked 1-7 and of course didn't pack a snack. I was surprisingly not very hungry until the end of the day. I can tell that my body has gotten used to not eating as much. I can't lie though, I was so tempted to get Arby's on my way home from work. I came home and made a salad and sandwich instead. I am so proud of myself for not cheating yet! It is only day 9, but I think I will be able to make it through Lent. This was definitely a great choice to do for my immersion. It was just as challenging as I expected it to be. Well, I'm off to bed to get some sleep for tomorrow. Got a long day of work ahead of me. Goodnight all!

Day #8
Tuesday March 8th, 2001
HAPPY FAT TUESDAY!! Not so happy of a day for me though. I am catholic, and I do practice Lent. My friends and I were talking about what we were giving up for Lent. I decided that I am not only going to do my immersion project for the month of March, but I am going to continue it through Lent. It isn't too much longer, and why not? I haven't really been having any trouble with it so far. What's another couple weeks, right? We'll see how this goes. So since its fast food, I have to admit it's been hard not to cheat today. Usually on Fat Tuesday I would be eating lots of junk food, drinking pop, and probably eating a big meal out at a restaurant. Of course, I was not allowed to do that today. Oh well, I will probably be the only Catholic that doesn't have a stomach ache at the end of the day! I had to open again today. I fixed a glass of chocolate milk to take with me on the way to work. Being half asleep when I was getting ready to leave, I put it in a glass with a handle on it. When I got into my car, I quickly figured out that the cup wasn't going to fit in my cup holder. You can imagine how funny I looked driving my car and 4 in the morning with a cup in my other hand. Luckily, I did manage to make it to work without spilling my milk or getting pulled over. WINNER!!
Instead of going out to dinner for Fat Tuesday, my friends and I decided to make dinner....again. We made spaghetti, which was delicious of course. I decided to reward myself and bought some Ben and Jerry's ice cream at the store for dessert.
FOOD DIARY
1 glass chocolate milk
1 bowl of cheerios
1 medium salad with cheese, eggs, bacon, onions, croutons, and ranch dressing
1 small bowl of spaghetti

Day #7
Monday, March 7th, 2011
It's been a week! Pretty successful immersion project so far, I'd have to say. My mom went grocery shopping today. Thankfully, because we were getting pretty low on everything except salad. Well, it was back to work today for me. I had to open this morning, 4:15AM! I'm not sure why, but I didn't eat breakfast this morning. I thought the extra ten minutes of sleep were more important. Luckily, they were. I wasn't too tired this morning, and my three hour shift went quickly. Hopefully my opening shift tomorrow goes just as fast. My mom did good on the grocery picking. I had a salami sandwich, salad, and grapes for lunch. My sandwich was so good that I decided to eat the same thing for dinner. Having a wide variety of food in the house is very important when trying to eat healthy. You want to have a variety of things so you are not eating the same thing everyday. You must get your nutrients from multiple food groups (a little hypocritical since I eat salad everyday, I know). Having lots of fruits and vegetables are a good choice to snack on when you feel hungry between meals. A handful of grapes of half of an apple dipped in honey always holds me over until dinner time. Enjoy your Sunday everyone!
FOOD DIARY
2 salami sandwiches with mayonaise
1 salad with cheese and ranch dressing
15 red grapes
20 barbeque chips
FUN FACT
One of my personal favorites from Taco Bell is their cheesy fiesta potatoes. They have 270 calories in them. I hope these numbers are scaring you away from fast food. It sure makes me think differently about the food that I'm putting in my body!

Sunday Funday! I got to sleep in again! And no work for me today. I could definitely get used to this spring break thing. I started my day off with eggs and toast for breakfast, and I splurged and had some chocolate milk. I thought that I deserved a little reward. I have began to notice that I have had more headaches than normal. I think I am having caffeine withdraw. I never really thought that I drank a lot of soda, and I don't normally drink coffee. Obviously, I consumed more caffeine that I thought if I'm having headaches. I haven't really had a craving for soda though. It really isn't that hard. I've been drinking juice and gatorade in its place. Soda is one of the worst things for you. It is basically just empty calories. I have talked to a lot of people lately who do not drink pop. They tell me that when they stopped drinking it, they lost weight instantly and did not even have to diet. It is full of sugar, and dehydrates the body. If people could cut soda out of their diet, they would be a lot healthier. I can already feel that my body is getting so much healthier. I am very happy so far with my decision in choosing this for my immersion. I know that it is going to be very satisfying and rewarding.

Day #5
Saturday, March 5th, 2011
Happy Saturday! Today has been a very relaxing day since I did not have to work. I stayed the night with my friends at their apartment & we woke up and cooked breakfast. Bacon, scrabbled eggs, and toast with orange juice. It was a great meal to start off the day! Breakfasts like this give me energy to start my day, and cooking together is a great way to have fun with friends. They are always better than going to McDonalds and ordering a greasy McMuffin and hash browns. For lunch, I had my usual salad with cheese and ranch dressing. After running errands in the afternoon, I went and worked out. It felt great to get back into the gym. I really need to start working out regularly to go along with my no eating out. It will just add to me feeling better and healthier! I had chips and salsa around dinner time and didn't really eat a meal. I can already tell after 5 days that my body is becoming more accustomed to eating smaller portions. Fast food portions are so much larger than regular portion sizes. It is so much better to prepare meals at home so you can eat a normal sized meal, and also so you are not wasting extra food. This is the first weekend of my immersion project. I usually go out to eat a lot on the weekend. I am a little concerned how I will deal with that. I guess we'll see if I run into that problem this weekend!

Day #4
Friday, March 4th, 2011
Hello there! It's finally the weekend! YAY! I know you all are very excited about that! Today has been a long day for me! Every Friday morning, I have the pleasure of opening at 4:00 in the morning at Ball Gym. I did wake up early enough to eat breakfast before my shift. Frosted Flakes were the choice of the day, and were very helpful in giving me the necessary energy to make it through the morning shift. I ate lunch around 11, and had another salad. They have really been my favorite substitute to grabbing taco bell between classes. It really hasn't been that hard not eating fast food. I though that I would struggle more with the temptation, but I really have not been tempted at all to run through the drive through. I feel so much better after eating a healthy meal then after eating fast food. I would always feel like taking a nap after eat a Big Mac and french fries. Eating healthy definitely gives you positive energy to help you get through the day. Fast food does the complete opposite. It slows you down and causes you to be tired and sluggish throughout the day. I had soup tonight for dinner, which was delicious. I eat soup quite a bit anyways. I usually can eat a whole can by myself. It really is a pretty healthy meal. There is usually about 150 calories in a serving and it really fills you up. Soup and a few crackers is a great meal to end the day!

Day #3
Thursday, March 3rd, 2011
Hey there! Sorry I didn't post yesterday! I'm a busy, busy bee. Well, day 3 has gone better than the last couple days. I'm starting to get the hang of planning my days more carefully. Of course, I had another long day of class and work. I have done a pretty good job of waking up early to eat breakfast, which is something I don't usually do. It really helps to get something in my system early to hold me over until late afternoon. I have been sticking to a bowl of cereal; usually Frosted Flakes or Special K. I have been sticking to a small, healthy lunch. I never really eat a lot of salad, but I have been addicted to it lately. It will definitely be a good meal to have during this immersion project. I did remember to pack a snack today to take to campus. I had Cheese-its and those little vanilla wafer cookies. Not the healthiest snack, but it did hold me over until dinner. Dinner was my favorite tonight. My best friend, who is helping me a lot through this project, cooked me Ramen noodles with cheese and chicken for dinner before my intramural basketball game. It was probably the best thing I've eaten in a long time. It was delicious!
No weight loss progress yet, but it is only day 3. I will keep you updated!

Day #1
Tuesday, March 1st, 2011
Today started the first day of my immersion project: no fast food or eating out for 30 days. I decided also that I was not going to drink soda during the courses of my project as an extra challenge. Let's just say my day didn't go exactly how I planned it to.
It started when I woke up at 7:30am. I commute to class and I needed to leave my house at 7:40am to make it to my 8:00am class. So, of course, I didn't have time to pack myself a snack or lunch to take to campus. I did have time to run home between classes to eat lunch. I did have time to pack a snack then to take for later in the evening before my night class. I got home around 8, and my friends and I decided to cook dinner together. We decided on homemade pizza and salads. It was a great meal & it was fun to spend time together. I ever convinced one of my friends to do my immersion project with me!
This is going to be a long month, but I'm looking forward to it. I will have to learn how to plan my days out better, which might mean waking up a bit earlier than I am used to. It should be a fun challenge and I can't wait to see how my other experiences go!

Proposal and Literature Review
The topic that I chose to research is the effect that fast food restaurants have on American health. I chose to research this topic because obesity has been an increasing problem in today’s world. Every day, nearly one-third of U.S. children aged 4 to 19 eat fast food, which likely packs on about six extra pounds per child, per year, and increases the risk of obesity (Holguin 2003). We have continued to hear how much it is affecting Americans, but people continue to do nothing about it. Fast food makes a major contribution toward obesity. It is an important issue that needs to be further researched. People need to know more about the food that they are getting in the drive-thru, and they need to realize the negative effect that is has on their health. What I really hope to find out is the positive health effects this will have on me. Does cutting out fast food have a major positive effect on my health? Will it positively affect my overall state of well-being?
One topic many researchers focus on with fast food is portion size. The portion sizes at fast food restaurants are much larger than recommended sizes. The cost of the products that these chains use is relatively low. By having low costs, they are able to offer a large amount of food for a decent price. Large portions contribute to overweight in three ways: they provide more calories than smaller portions, encourage people to consume significantly more calories, and to greatly underestimate those calories (Young and Marion 239). The more people eat fast food, the more they get accustomed to these large portion sizes. By taking in a large amount of calories, their bodies become used to this amount, and feel that it is normal. This ultimately leads to obesity. The fast food restaurants do not put food labels on their products so many people do not know how unhealthy the food really is.
Due to our everyday demands in life, America has become much of a convenience culture. And what could be more convenient than fast food? Its name even suggests it. Fast food has become a way of life for Americans. They have taken over every big city, small town, and every street corner. In most cities, you can’t drive more than one mile without seeing the giant lit up sign of a fast food chain. With so many different cuisines to choose from, it is not hard for everyone to find something they like. Hamburgers, fries, pizza, chicken fingers, tacos, milkshakes, and so many other things have become available in just minutes through drive-thru. Even breakfast items have been added to most menus. With the speed and convenience of fast food, Americans are too blind to think about the negative effects. Many people get into the habit of eating fast food, and they begin to rely on it more and more. Convenience is a terrible excuse to eat large amounts of fast food. How long does it really take to prepare a healthy meal at home? Buying healthy foods at the grocery store and preparing meals in advance is not that much work. Today’s society has become too lazy, which is probably why the obesity rate has climbed considerably in the past few decades.
The link between fast food and obesity seems simple enough: Fast food is notoriously high in fats, sugar, salt and calories (Heathtree.com). Figure 1 shows the calories in some of the most popular fast food items. Eating a diet high in these four components can lead to many different health problems along with obesity. There is nothing nutritious about fast food and their standard ingredients. These products are also made with many preservatives to promote a long shelf life, which you can imagine is awfully unhealthy. Highly processed ingredients help hold consistency and add flavor. The calories people are consuming do not give the necessary energy needed to get through the day. In fact, fast food does just the opposite. The ingredients in fast food cause people to be tired and sluggish. A diet high in saturated fats, sodium, and sugar content leads to obesity. Fast food generally lacks the main food groups of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. The food is normally cooked in saturated oil which is also very unhealthy. Obesity can lead to serious health problems such as high cholesterol, and heart disease.
I am an exercise science major and I study a lot about the body and how it functions. I have a good background on personal health and diet. I know that I would be a good person to study and research this topic. I am very interested in personal health and the health of others. I think this research would benefit people who want to become healthier, but do not know how. I hope my research can inspire and persuade people to choose a healthier and better lifestyle.
Lately, I have been eating a lot of fast food. I usually use the excuse that it is more convenient, or that I am too busy to take the time to cook something nutritious and healthy. In my opinion, it is beginning to become a serious problem. I have gained a reasonable amount of weight and I do not feel as healthy as I used to be. I have also stopped exercising as much as I used to, which has contributed to my weight gain. I want to change my lifestyle and cut out all fast food and eating out at restaurants from my diet for the entire month of March. I plan to only eat food that I prepare at home or take with me from home. I will keep a food diary, monitor my weight loss and overall well-being, and record my challenges along the way. I will probably run into many issues in this project. I will have to be conscious about how long I will be on campus and away from home, and have to plan my meals accordingly. I will have to find meals that will not spoil and are practical to take with me. By completing this project, I hope to learn the health effects of not eating fast food. There has been much research done about the negative effects of fast food and its contribution to obesity. However, not much research has been done about the positive heath effects of a diet consisting of no fast food. I want to improve and add to the research about this topic by showing the positive effects of completely removing fast food from a diet. I will be able to show the outcome of my challenge, and I will be able to discover if I feel healthier, and also how it affects my overall well-being.
My Topic Memo
My topic that I chose to research is the effect that fast food restaurants have on American health. I chose to research this topic because obesity has been an increasing problem in today’s world. People need to know more about the food that they are getting in the drive-thru, and they need to realize the negative effect that is has on their health.
Many people make the mistake of only paying attention to exercise when trying to ‘get in shape’. They make the assumption that if they weren’t exercising before, they just need to start exercising to be healthy. That is definitely not the case. Just because someone exercises regularly or does not look obese, does not mean that they are healthy. As the obesity rate continues to climb in the young people of America, I believe that it is important to start changing now before it is too late in life.
I am an exercise science major and I study a lot about the body and how it functions. I have a good background on personal health and diet. I know that I would be a good person to study and research this topic. I am very interested in personal health and the health of others. RR #5 Wadsworth Ch. 6-7
Chapter 6 in the Wadsworth Guide to Research discusses how to read rhetorically. Reading rhetorically means you are paying attention to the context and analyzing the rhetorical situation. When reading something rhetorically, you must be aware of your purpose for reading that specific material. It might be helpful to read the material more than once to understand all of the information. Reading rhetorically requires you to not only understand the context, but to annotate your resources. Annotating is writing on or about something. When reading a resource, you must identify its claim, reasons, and evidence. The claim is the overall point that the resource is making. In other words, its thesis. Reasons are what is used to support the claim, and evidence is needed to show support for the reasons and claims. After reading your resources, you should be able to summarize them. You may also choose to paraphrase, or use direct quotes from your research.
Chapter 7 talks about tracking and evaluating data. There are four steps to tracking data: verify, copy, respond, and fill gaps. Verifying data helps keep you organized and progress in your research project. You must decide what research you actually need according to your research plan. Once you have verified a resource that you want to use, it is important that you copy it. Making copies of secondary data, and keeping detailed notes on primary data will help you avoid losing any research. Responding to your research entails that you analyze the resource in relation to your research question. The last step, filling the gaps, is when you trace the resources referred to in your research. If you follow a certain author's work, you may be able to find other resources that could be very helpful in your research project.
I thought these chapters were very helpful. I have not really heard much about these topics in any of my previous English classes. I did not know what reading rhetorically even was. I guess I have always sort of done it, but it helps that the book really explained it. The most helpful thing to me was the section talking about paraphrasing, summarizing, and quoting. I feel like me, along with many of my peers, have not completely understood the difference between these three ways of recording research. I found the description of these methods very helpful. The information from Chapter 7 was more familiar to me. I feel that I have always followed these steps for the most part when tracking and evaluating my research. However, filling the gaps was one thing I had not heard of. I have not ever really thought of tracing resources used in the research that I have found. This method can be very helpful in finding related material, and I look forward to using this method while conducting my own research.

RR #3 Wadsworth Ch. 4-5
In chapter 4 of Wadsworth Guide to Research, they discuss how to find resources through secondary research. Secondary resources are produced through someone else, and not straight through the source. The first thing they discuss is locating resources. They discuss types of resources and the two different categorizations: how texts change over time, and how texts are reviewed. Static resources include books, websites, or software applications. Syndicated resources are resources that are published over time under the same title. These include sources such as magazines, newspapers, blogs, podcasts, and journals. Dynamic resources are always changing with time, such as social networking sites, online communities, e-mail lists, and newsgroups. Also when conducting research, one must have a research plan.
Chapter 5 explains how to conduct primary research. When making observations, researchers should use all of their senses. An important part of recording observations is a double-entry journal. One side is for observations, and the other side is for reflection. Another way of conducting primary research is through an interview. When conducting an interview there are three important steps: setting the interview time and location with the person or people, write your interview questions, and decide how to record the interview. Surveys can also be a good example of primary research. Once you have gathered your research, one must present it properly using the IMRAD format. This stands for introduction, methodology, results, analysis, and discussion.
I think that these two chapters were very informative. They will definitely help considering we are about to start our research for our topics. I like how the book discusses many different types of research that is not normally thought of and used. I have never discussed the difference between primary and secondary research in any of my english classes before. By understanding the difference, I think it helps you to find more of a variety of resources to use in researching a topic. The book also does a great job of explaining in detail how to conduct each type of research. It will be very helpful to look back at these while researching my topic.

RR #2 Wadsworth Ch. 2-3
Writing a research paper is done by following a set of steps. Invention is first, when the author develops an argument and discovers what he or she will say to the audience. The information then must be put together in an order that the author wants to present it, a method called arrangement. Style refers to how the author conveys what he or she has written. Memory and delivery are concerned with how the speech is performed. Researching is the next step. It is helpful in any stage of writing and can be gathered from many different sources. Drafting helps generate ideas that you may use in your research paper. Peer review is an important step of editing. You have a chance to see what your audience has to say about the research that you have done. Peer review is not just proofreading. It is a chance for other people to comment on the paper as a whole. Revising, editing, and proofreading help polish off your paper. It is a last chance to fix any mistakes and finish off what you have to say. It will get you another step closer to your final draft. Once you have finished all the steps, publishing is the final thing. This refers to how you will present your writing to your audience.
I thought that the textbook did a great job of explaining the way a paper should be written. Although it does give a detailed set of steps to follow, it also allows the author to freely do what he or she feels in necessary to complete a research paper. These steps will definitely help me with my research paper, and also in picking a topic.

Research.......
Throughout the early years of high school I was very unsure of what career I wanted to pursue when I got older. I had been very involved in sports for my entire life, but also had many other interests. When I was really young I wanted to be play in the WNBA. As I got older and more mature, I realized I needed a more realistic dream. I went through many different phases. I wanted to be an interior designer, an architect, a graphic designer. My senior year had arrived, and I finally had decided. Music had been a large part of my life for many years. I was involved in choir at a young age, and stuck with it through high school, but I had never had any professional lessons. I wanted to be a singer. Being a Muncie local, I knew Ball State had a great music program, and I was interested in going to school in my home town. If I was going to get into the music program, I was going to need a lot of work. I wanted the best vocal coach I could find. Believe it or not, there aren't many vocal coaches in Muncie, Indiana. We were on a low budget, and did not want to travel far considering I had school, was a three sport athlete, and participated in swing choir. My mom and I called around for weeks and finally found the right fit. I only had to travel about two minutes from my house, and it was fifty dollars per hour. I only had about 3 months of training before my audition. Long story short, I got accepted into the music program. If I wouldn't have found my amazing vocal coach, I don't think I would have gotten in. I lot of work went into finding him, and it definitely paid off.
